DUAL ALPHA 500MHZ MACHINE
I just took delivery of a 1GHz machine which I bought expressly for the purpose of running Mathematica. After installation and setup I ran a couple of simulations only to discover that it's performing at about the same level as my 500MHz Pentium III!! Can anyone explain to me why this is the case?

20 When you overclock you are running a machine with an invalidated warranty on every main component (motherboard, CPU, memory chips, video card, hard drive, etc. Intel would love it if every chip they made could run at 500 Mhz. The = 500 Mhz chip would sell for three or four times the price of a 200 Mhz chip.

I'm sure your 500 Mhz Alpha is a cool machine, but I was talking about AXPs and Multias. Terminology counts. You need to be more specific; AXP is nothing more than an old synonym for Alpha. Most people want a computer to do more than number crunching, like networking, compiling, processing large amounts of data.

Dear Fellow Lightwavers, I would like to purchase a DUAL ALPHA 500MHZ MACHINE! I was looking to purchase the Deskstation product (Raptor Renegade) but they have informed me that this machine has been taken off the market until August when they will finish their new motherboard. Do you guys have a better solution.

If I was using the machine for typical consumer applications such as word processing and Internet access, the extra CPU speed would be meaningless.
