6400 vs 7500
A Pentium III 500E is a better choice than a Pentium 500. The 500E is a "coppermine" core with a 256 Kbyte full speed L2 cache, the 500 is the older core with a 512 Kbyte half speed L2 cache. A Pentium III 500E @ 500 MHz is better than a Celeron 600 @ 600 MHz. A Celeron 566 @ 850 MHz is better than a Pentium III

(500 MHz x704 cards due in March, says Exponential). So ultimately, given some additional capital, the 7500 could be a much, much faster machine. (It also has better memory services to make sure it can back up these claims -- one reason why a 100 MHz machine only benchmarks 15% slower than a 180 MHz machine.

Can I Put X On This Machine
There are a couple of machines downstairs with API guts - and they've been nothing but trouble. Especially the dual CPU system that couldn't be made to run at its rated speed and they had to "dumb it down" to 500 Mhz processors. At least the Digital and Compaq Alphas have been reliable.

With Intel ramping up the price/performance curve at this rate http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/15683.html the days of a 500 mhz machine are coming to an end very quickly. By the end of Q2 2001 you will not even be able to find a new 500 mhz PIII, Intel will not be making anything slower than 700-800 mhz!
